The number of boats coming through our yard increased dramatically, and the size of the projects also increased. We currently have some interesting projects on the go. A 47 ft. Grand Banks, purchased in Europe, is undergoing a change of the electrical system to meet North American standards. This includes changing the major appliances requiring extensive cabinetry work. A very exciting project that is ongoing is the restoration of a 56 ft. wooden Chris Craft. To date we have redone the hull. This included recaulking the bottom and splining all the hull seams above the waterline. We have replaced the whole transom, replaced the sub-deck and installed new teak decks. We have fiberglassed the cabin top, the bulwarks and the forward settee area. There were 24 bronze portlights that had been painted over. We stripped them to bare bronze and had them chrome-plated. They look absolutely spectacular and make quite a statement. We are just wrapping up a full paint on a 105 ft. and about to start painting on a 111 ft., with a major renovation project on a 120 ft. yacht ramping up. GOOD NEWS FOR AMERICAN BOAT OWNERS The value of the Canadian dollar is rapidly declining against the U.S. currency. It is currently at the eight-five cent mark, which is like a fifteen percent discount on work done for the American boat owner. Another big plus for American boaters is all work can be done tax-free. Talk to your project manager about how to have your projects qualify for this tax break. EMPLOYEE NEWS We have a new project manager at Philbrook’s. Ian Collombin (pictured below) started with us at the beginning of this New Year. We should say Ian has re-started with us as he actually worked at Philbrooks between 1999 and 2002. He started messing around in boats as a young child with his family. As a youth he built kayaks and sailing dinghies. He became a commercial diver, studied yacht design, and designed and built aluminum diving boats. Two of these went to the West Indies. Ian and his wife went with them. They operated a successful dive and tour boat company for nine years. With the birth of their first son they decided to return to Canada and settled in Victoria. Ian Collombin Project Manager Ian worked for several boat builders as a project manager. He became competent building in steel, aluminum and composite materials. Ian took the project management course and went into the construction industry where he flourished but his love was still boats. When Charlie Afford retired in 2014 he recommended we consider Ian to replace him. Charlie had worked with Ian on several large boat projects. Ian completed the construction project he was working on and has now joined Philbrook’s and we are glad to have him. Also in employee news we have employed some new people, both young and experienced. One very heartening note is we now have six people serving apprenticeships in various disciplines. This really bodes well for the future. FUEL POLISHING SYSTEM FOR YOUR BOAT Because of lack of use or fuel being stored for long periods of time (e.g. during winter months), water, mould, bacteria and yeast can gather and grow in your fuel tank. This can lead to clogged fuel filters and fuel starvation in the engine that may result in a burnt-up fuel pump or your engine stopping, usually at the worst possible time. When installing a fuel polishing system it is good practice to ensure the fuel pick up tube in the tank is as close as possible to the bottom as this is where most of the contaminants reside. Also the best time for polishing the fuel is immediately after the tank has been filled. That is when the sediments get agitated and are easiest to run through the polisher. Talk to your project manager as to which size polisher is ideal for your boat. SEATTLE BOAT SHOW Philbrook’s will be attending the Seattle Boat Show Jan. 23 to Feb. 1. We are in the East Hall Booth 829. After a very mild pleasant winter in our area spring has arrived with mostly sunny skies and reasonably warm temperatures. Boaters have been early this year getting their boats ready for the cruising season. If you are not ready yet better get on the phone and book a haul out. The addition of the Yacht Park next door has increased our capacity for hauling boats substantially, allowing us to better serve your needs. Spring also means the start of the annual rendezvous season at Roche Harbour. Philbrooks will be attending many of these offering advice and courtesy boat inspections. Following are some of the scheduled rendezvous: Grand Banks May 8-11 Nordic Tug May 29-31 Bayliner June 5-7 Riviera June 13-14 Ocean Alexander June 19-21 Tollycraft June 26-28 Sea Ray July 17-19 Navigator Aug. 21-23 Selene Aug. 24-26 We hope to see you at one of these events. Some Sad and Happy News Chuck Dillon is retiring - sad news for Philbrooks, happy news for Chuck. Chuck has been at Philbrooks since 1974 – that is 40 years folks. Chuck has been in charge of our marine ways and the crew that looks after the most important part of your boat, The Bottom. Notable haul outs include a boat built from two steel boiler drums welded together with a bronze propeller. It gave a whole new meaning to the term electrolysis. Then there was the marine research vessel that hadn’t been painted for four years. Chuck says the barnacles were six inches long and the wizards who were running the boat couldn’t understand why their eight-knot boat was only doing one knot. Chuck is a world-renowned surfer. Part of his retirement will be spent looking for the perfect wave. He also plans to have a lounge chair positioned at the head of the marine ways to make sure everything is going smoothly. Our best wishes to a very nice man. You will be missed. Philbrooks and Van Isle News We have had a very busy early spring here at Philbrooks. We have been able to hire several new qualified trades people so that we can get the work done On Time and On Budget. Also as mentioned earlier Van Isle has both their trailers running which greatly increases our capacity to haul boats. We have been able to grow our bottom end staff to meet the higher demands. Also Van Isle has completed a major restructuring project in the marina itself. Because of Department of Fisheries regulations work could only be done in winter months so the project spanned two years. They had a small window to blast and dredge the rock between D and E docks. They also dredged between C and D docks and E and F docks. They added 280 feet to E dock plus new 30 and 40 foot fingers on D and E docks. They are currently building some boathouses which will be available for rent. The Sea Glass Waterfront Grill continues to be overwhelmingly successful. On Trip Adviser they were named the Number One restaurant In Sidney. Charter Opportunity 78’ Monk McQueen classic motor yacht   She is in beautiful condition. Have a Great Season and Remember Philbrooks Is Here For You host Thu, 01 May 2014 01:39:00 GMT f1397696-738c-4295-afcd-943feb885714:133 https://www.philbrooks.com/About-Us/Latest-News/ID/132/FallWinter-2013-Newsletter#Comments 0 http://www.philbrooks.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/RssComments.aspx?TabID=1141&ModuleID=1932&ArticleID=132 http://www.philbrooks.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=132&PortalID=56&TabID=1141 Fall/Winter 2013 Newsletter https://www.philbrooks.com/About-Us/Latest-News/ID/132/FallWinter-2013-Newsletter It was THE BEST! This is the description given by many of Philbrook’s clients describing this past summer’s cruising. Lots of sunshine, record high temperatures in northern B.C. and Alaska, excellent fishing in many areas, all combined to make this a fabulous spring, summer and fall. We have had an influx of boats just returning from their cruising late into October. Haven’t seen that for a long time. We are also busy as so many people thought of great new ideas and have-to-have items after using their boats for such an extended period. Many have gone on our Yacht Watch program for the winter. Philbrook’s Yacht Watch program gives the absentee owner peace of mind knowing professionals are caring for their boat. Boat owners on our Yacht Watch program also receive discounts on haul outs at Philbrook’s. Let us know if you would like details. What's Happening 2 marriages of note: Jamie Hansen and Jennifer Alexander wed in September. (who says office romances don’t work.) Long time bachelor Les Margetts tied the knot with the lovely Kathryn. Lots of little babies around: Scottie had a boy, Robbie a girl, Eric a boy, and Mark a boy (congratulations to the fellows, and their wives) Drew Irwin was invited to the Feadship yard in Holland to observe the launching of a new 85-meter yacht and to tour some of the other major yards. The larger yacht yards are booked into the future. As an example Feadship is fully booked until 2017. Drew was also at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show where there was not only optimism but good reason for optimism - lots of positive activity and completed sales. Paper Charts A big fuss was created when N.O.A.A. announced it was no longer going to print paper charts. This is true but paper charts will still be available through other sources. N.O.A.A. is continuing to survey and chart the U.S. coastline and Great Lakes. The only change is they are not going to print the charts. They are available electronically or printed through the private sector. Go to their website www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov for more information. Dripless Shaft Seals A recent article in SEA Magazine brought to our attention the fact that dripless shaft seals are not maintenance-free. Most manufacturers recommend the shaft seals should be inspected twice a year for wear and tear. Bellows fatigue is the likeliest problem. Exposure to heat, vibration and accidental exposure to fuel or fluid spills can compromise the integrity of the bellows. The bellows can also suffer from compression fatigue. It is also important to check your inlet water hose. Some manufacturers recommend changing the complete seal every six years. Book Your Haul-Out Now Although it is only December, our main ways are already heavily booked for March, April and May. Taking into account that we may have some emergency situations in the interim, it would be prudent to ensure you have a time set up for your annual out-of-the-water maintenance. Please get in touch with your project manager soon. Christmas Party We work hard at Philbrooks but we do like to have fun too. Our Christmas Party was a great success letting us spend time with our families and catching up on our lives outside of the day to day. Wishing you and yours the very best of the Season! host Tue, 31 Dec 2013 23:59:00 GMT f1397696-738c-4295-afcd-943feb885714:132 https://www.philbrooks.com/About-Us/Latest-News/ID/87/Nordhavn-Service-Provider#Comments 0 http://www.philbrooks.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/RssComments.aspx?TabID=1141&ModuleID=1932&ArticleID=87 http://www.philbrooks.com/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/Tracking/Trackback.aspx?ArticleID=87&PortalID=56&TabID=1141 Nordhavn Service Provider https://www.philbrooks.com/About-Us/Latest-News/ID/87/Nordhavn-Service-Provider Philbrook's has worked on many Nordhavn's over the years, both new and older yachts.  Whether on behalf of the owner or P.A.E., we have always appreciated the opportunity to work on these well-constructed vessels.  P.A.E. has proven to be extremely informative and supportive whenever we have had to contact them.  Philbrook's is now listed on the Nordhavn website as an official Service Provider (Vendor) and we are looking forward to building on our relationship over the years to come.
